Can interspecies diplomacy begin in the womb?

After seventy years on Tofarn, the human colonists and the native Tofa still know very little about each other. Misunderstanding breed conflict, and the conflicts are escalating. Scientist Mara Cadell’s radical proposal that host mothers of either species carry fraternal twins, human and Tofa, in the hope that the bond between twins can bridge the gap between species. Mara lost her own twin, Levi, in utero, but she has secretly kept him alive in her mind as companion and collaborator.

Mara succeeds in obtaining governmental backing for her project – but both the human and Tofa establishments have their own agendas. Mara must shepherd the Twin-Bred through dangers she anticipated and others that even the canny Levi could not foresee. Will the Twin-Bred bring peace, war, or something else entirely?

"Now and then I read a really good book, and this is one of the best . . . Escaping from an over-crowded Earth, humans search for somewhere to live. . . They settle on Tofarn, which seems to fit all of their requirements – even the indigenous aliens appear happy to accept them. Trouble inevitably flares between the native Tofa and the human newcomers, mostly because of mutual ignorance. What is needed is a means of bringing the two communities closer . . . What follows is the story of a scientific attempt to produce that perfect solution; the setbacks and the successes, the joys and the unforeseen disasters. A happy ending? A hopeful one, definitely! I would love a sequel to this beautifully written, captivating novel. More please!" -- Ellen Ghyll, author

"An original and beautifully written SciFi story . . . The Tofa are interesting and well worked out aliens . . . In a way this story reminded me of Capek's 'War with the Newts', not surprising as both stories shine a light on how humans treat each other and where we go wrong. But where Capek's view is a grim one, Wyle still leaves some hope that we as a species might one day see the light. All in all a beautiful, thought provoking tale. I will keep an eye out for Wyle's next book." -- Carien Ubink, Pearls Cast Before a McPig

TwinBred eBook Karen A Wyle

As a young human girl growing up on planet Tofarn, Dr. Cadell saw the unrest that results from the inability of two species to successfully interact. As a young woman, she vowed to make it her life’s mission to bring the planet’s native species, called the Tofa, together with humans. The idea she proposes is radical: what if a select group of human and Tofa females agreed to carry twins—one of each species—to term? What if the resulting children were raised together, educated in the same school? With enough diplomatic training, these “Twinbred” just might bring about a lasting peace to the planet…

First of all, major points to Wyle for creating an alien species that is both completely believable, and completely inhuman. While many authors craft aliens that are simply humans with green skin and extra arms, Wyle manages to make the Tofa everything that humans are not: they have no system of writing, no creative impulse, and even perceive colors much differently than we do (the color blue, apparently, makes them drunk). With differences like these, no wonder the two species have trouble getting along! However, the cast of characters is quite large, and not everyone gets the fleshing out that they deserve. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend it for lovers of character-driven fiction. But for devotees of Asimov, Heinlein, and other classical science fiction authors? Look no further!

TwinBred eBook Karen A Wyle Reviews

I loved this book. I loved the twin bred pairs. I wish the author would have divulged who all the mothers were, and which twin bred were whose. I understand it is hard to keep track of so many characters, but even a sentence would have been enough. I didn't like that there was so much dialogue between Mara and her twin. Way too much. I hated the fact that some of the twin bred were lost. Sad.
Twin-Bred
By Karen A. Wyle

Humans were uncomfortable around the native sentient inhabitants of Tofarn. A group of human scientists decided to attempt to develop better understanding between the two species by implanting embryos of both human and Tofa in human and Tofa surrogate mothers. The hope was that the twins, called the Twin-Bred, would be more able to understand the languages, behaviors, and motivations of each species. The Twin-Bred did understand one another, and they were interested in being ambassadors to help human and Tofarn people get along.

I was intrigued by the author's development of the Tofa. Physically they were not humanoid, but they were close enough that the humans felt that they should be able to have interactions with them. Tofa had 4 arms, or 5. They leaned instead of what we call sitting. They were taller than humans, and the area where humans would look for a face was featureless. There were not only physical differences from humans. They saw colors differently, tasted food differently, their speech, and their mannerisms- bowing, laughing, crying- were different. (I don't want to give too much away, but let the reader discover the Tofa.) The Tofa other than the Twin-Bred seemed intimidating, partly because the humans were unsure of their intentions.

The main human character, Mara, and her story were less interesting than discovering about the Tofa. Mara's twin had died, yet there was a connection with him that was not lost- unless it was her imagination. The feeling of the connection was a reason for her enthusiasm for the Twin-Bred project.

A question that I had was why did humans decide to settle a world that already had sentient inhabitants. I can come up with a reason, which, again, I wouldn't want to say in a review because it would be a spoiler.

Upon finishing Twin-Bred, I checked to see if Ms. Wyle had other books, but there was only a short story listed. I recommend the book for people who enjoy detailed discussion about other species. There is not a great deal of adventure or action such as there would be in a space opera. The book gradually reveals information about the Tofa, but never enough that they become entirely familiar. Twin-Bred is a book that I plan to read again.
I can't remember the last time -- if ever -- I wanted to give an indie book 5 stars. This book is skillfully crafted and well-written. Even if you prefer an action-filled story, you might want to give this book a try. The story is told with subtlety and mostly through dialogue, character interaction, and the slightly twisted psyche of the main character. The humans struggle with all-too-human problems Expecting the enigmatic, resident aliens to want to share their land/planet, to trust humans and openly reveal themselves and their culture simply because humans expect it, to think and respond like humans, and to accept relationships with humans and even respect them as superior just because they have better technology. My only quibble is that it was frequently difficult to tell when a transition between scenes had occurred, because they would often run together in the version, so I've given it a solid 4.5 stars. But it's still excellent sci-fi.

A main complaint of those who gave this book a low rating is that there are too many characters and they were hard to keep track of. The author included an appendix at the end with the names and brief description of many of the characters, which I found helpful but really only referred to a few times.

I felt this book compared very favorably with many I've read by well-known and established authors. Ms. Wyle is a talented author who has a bright future.
