An author that I follow sent a rare recommendation to his newsletter subscribers recommending this book. I respect that author so I purchased this book by an author that I had never heard of before. I normally read indie authors so I was intrigued and put it at the top of my reading queue.

This is a sci-fi story set in the 2790's so there is plenty of time for advancements in technology. The sci-fi stuff in this book is not outlandish, in fact quite believable. The story is well placed with a small assortment of key characters that come to life. I was taken in by the creative story telling. There is a very surprising turns in the story near the end that caught me off guard. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the skillful art of t he author. I look forward to his next book which will be out later this year. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. It really is a very good and entertaining read. I spent several long nights and lost some sleep because I just had to read the next chapter.

Excelsior Book 1 of the New Frontiers Series eBook Jasper T Scott Tom Edwards Aaron Sikes Reviews

Extremely well written military adventure. Military interrelationships were believable and solid. Story never suffered from lack of excitement and action. Delightful plot twists and surprises.
I got this as a free download. It has a lot of four and five star reviews so I figured it would be pretty good. I'm not sure what book those reviewers actually read. I only read a little more than a third of the book before I gave up on it. Books I start and don't finish because I lost interest in them get one star in my reviewing system.

Had some potential to be a pretty good Space Opera but it just never made it there for me. I think because the author did not spend the time to think out a consistent universe and a consistent science for a science fiction book plus I never really believed in any of the military side of the book either. It just seemed really impossible to me. Never really appreciated any of the characters either. There just wasn't anything in this book that I really cared enough about to finish so I gave up on it.
If you've enjoyed some of Jasper's other books (like the Dark Space series), then I think you'll like this book as well for the same kind of reasons. A future war is presented well, with technology that could be a natural progression from what we have today. The characters are believable, because they aren't perfect, and you start to feel for them exactly what the writer wants. Then, just when you thought you knew what direction it was going, something unexpected happens...
Brilliant New sy/fi. Full of twisting changing plots and a good, believable story line. I started Excelsior this morning and just now finished it this evening. Well developed characters that are believable and interesting. I really was surprised by the ending. There is very little "hard science" but it was believable without detracting from the story. Very nice character building with believable characters. I highly recommend Excelsor and look forward to the sequel ( due out 12 / 16) and other books Jasper Scott.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The plot seemed relatively straightforward, but as it develops goes in directions that I completely didn't forsee. A naval officer is sent on a trip through a wormhole to a planet that may be able to sustain human life, and could be a place where his government could send people to escape the possible consequences of a nuclear war with another faction. He had to leave his wife behind with the knowledge that a several month trip will expand to several years because of relativity and the effects of traveling near light speed for long periods of time. In the interim, a nuclear war breaks out on Earth, which his wife was able to survive, but must now deal with living in a devastated country. Can't relate what happens next without spoiling the many surprises, but suffice to say, nothing ends up like an interested reader would think it would.
Scott is an excellent story teller. The technical aspects of the story are believable and were used to help carry the plot and not overwhelm the reader. The characters are well developed and easy to identify with. There is a major twist towards the end that came as a surprise to me. It was well done.

I found the story thought provoking especially with the state of the world as it is today and the possible futures that we face.

One final comment. The book's ending concludes as a complete story and can be read and enjoyed even if there were no sequel. Fortunately, Scott has promised a sequel to come out in December 2016. I will be looking forward to reading. I highly recommend this book.
I've been reading science fiction since before the invention of plastic. I tend to be somewhat picky about what I read. If you have read any of Jasper Scott's books than you probably have or soon will read them all. Mr. Scott is a master of his craft and of the genre. Without being a spoiler, Excelsior is a military science fiction with many turns and twists right up to the last word. The action and suspense are nonstop as with all his books. I particularly like that this is a complete story. Stand alone books with satisfying endings are raritys these days.

As with all his books the settings are vividly described; it is very easy to put yourself there. The characters are fully developed; it is easy to commiserate with or despise them as the case may be. I think I would recognize them if they showed up at my front door. I am a stickler for accurate science and Mr Scott nails it every time. He obviously does his research!

If you like military sci-fi his is a must read!
